Brown Patch - Diagnosis and Treatments - Prevention and maintenance of a healthy fungus free lawn

Hello Houston

Not only has 2015 been a wet year but NOAA is predicting a cold and wet winter in Spring of 2016

What does this potentially mean for your Houston area lawn?

Many Houston lawns suffered in the hotter months of 2015 due to not only the excessive wetness but the Brown Patch and Take all patch that thrived from September all the way til November in the hot humid conditions.

What to do?

Prior to treating its always best to have a soil sample taken to figure out what is really going on

First - several organic solutions are available between corn meal and neem oil or non-organic applications

Next - the areas of your lawn that are significantly lower that collect and hold water should be top dressed so the lawn has better grading / drainage. Now that the lawns are going dormant - its a great time to do this kind of adjustments

Third - some additional cultural practices - like watering at night or using non-organic fertilizers should be addressed prior to the coming spring season.

Fourth - scalping or mowing the lawn very low should be avoided

We can provide the following services to help diagnose and treat diseases in ornamental plants and turf

We do not cover all areas - so its best to email to see if we are a good fit to service your area

1. Site inspection and core samples to send out for soil tests [$85]
2. Provide a treatment plant either organic or otherwise to treat whats wrong with the lawn
3. We can provide an organic top dressing solution
4. We can provide a solution for core aeration [if needed]
5. We can provide a solution for drainage / low areas [the best time to do this is Jan / Feb]
6. We can provide scheduled maintenance for fertilization and further applications to get your lawn on track for the new year

Sod Delivered and Installed in Houston TX - Prices from 169 per pallet - materials and labor

WE Sod Houston

Houston TX - summer is here - its hot.
Rain has delayed many spring and summer plantings

many customers #1 question - can we plant sod in this heat?

YES - fresh cut St Augustine is viable if within 24- 48 hours of harvest it is installed and watered in

Regular twice a day watering is required for about the first two [2] weeks after installation - for the sod to root

As soon as St Augustine sod [sodgrass] is rooted - cut down on watering

DO NOT WATER AT NIGHT after sod is rooted - night watering promotes fungus and root diseases

Spring is finally come to Houston TX

This is the best time of year to install grass

one pallet of sod covers 450 sq ft of area - about 20 x 22 or 15 x 30

one yard of soil will cover 27 ft long by 3 or 4 ft wide by 3 or 4 inchs deep
or about less than an inch over the same area as one pallet

Is tilling needed?
In general we do not suggest the soil needs to be tilled
By adding a soil conditioner like Gypsum - the intense labor of tilling can be removed

We use sharp shovels and strong crew members to physically scrape up the old dead grass and weeds

the existing soil is raked using a hard rake

its ready for the new sod!

after sod is installed - it should be watered in and a lawn roller passed over the new plantings
this sets the sod to the soil and gives the sod a finished look

Lawn Grass delivered and installed - starting at 169 per pallet - Houston - River Oaks - Heights - Downtown - Bellaire - Montrose - Rice

Hello Houston TX

Spring is right around the corner and its time to go out side - enjoy this lovely weather and figure out what to do next in the yard

Is it too cold to install sod at this time of year?

The simple answer is no!

Sod grass may look a little shabby - coming out of dormancy - it will have tan and green mixed together - but cold does not kill a new lawn

The trick about installing sod in the cooler months is to remember that newly planted sod does need to be regularly watered even in mild temperatures - Be careful with areas of shade and/or heavy shade because they need less water

Hello Houston, Jeremy Goldstein+ here manager of Heights Hauling and Landscape. We are Houston's premier sod installation contractor. We specialize in laying fresh, green, quality sod in Houston TX. The most common type of sod installed in town is St Augustine Raleigh sod.

We are now in the last week of Jan 2015 and the day and night temperatures are all over the place day to day and week to week. Is it too COLD to install a new St Augustine lawn?
The simplest answer is no it not too cold to install sod.

However, with these cold and wet conditions the sod will need to be watered less. We recommend newly installed sod be watered about 15 min only one time a day, This heavy watering will take out the air pockets and help set the sod into the soil or what some people call the friable seed bed.

After about FIVE [5] days of daily water, its time to dry up the sod a bit. This second phase, backing down the water to about 10 -15 min 3 times a week in the morning, again about 1 hour before sunrise, will force the sod to start putting out roots. Sod laid in area's that are shady will need less water and take longer to root.

Maintenance watering varies based on many conditions. Normal maintenance watering is 2 or 3 x a week for about 15 min. Best time to water varies based on the time of year but other than the coldest months [December and January] it should be before sunrise. In the coldest months of the year it can be post sun rise but before 10 am

we never recommend watering sod every day after the initial watering in period
we never recommend watering at night. Night watering promotes fungus of all kinds

We install several different types of sod that are great for Houston's climate.
Raleigh St Augustine is a good all around grass and is the most economical
Palmetto St Augustine is a more shade tolerant sod
Bermuda [Celebration] is a fine bladed sod that is more drought tolerant - can handle more traffic with less wear and does well in both light shade and full sun
Zoysia [Emerald] is a fine bladed sod that is soft - slow growing. This sod is more expensive and requires a bit of specialized care but its worth it.

Sod installation Spring 2015 - Is your yard a muddy mess? Sod and Drainage Experts in Houston TX

Hello Houston

Longer days and warmer temperatures are coming to town

The spring planting season is almost here for 2015

Its time to go outside and evaluate your yard for the coming warmer months

The biggest issues right now are drainage and dead grass

The heavy soil of Houston drains poorly when saturated with water by winter storms and cold temperatures - sod coming out of dormancy is not dead - and its way to early to fertilize

We install ST Augustine sod starting at 169 per pallet [delivery charges are extra and vary by location]

Ground prep is done prior to installation by using sharp shovels [best practices] removing the old dead turf and weeds and scaring the remaining surface soil

This is the best time to adjust the grade either by contouring the existing soil or by adding new enriched top soil -

Waste is hauled away and most of the time a soil conditioner added [we use gypsum or other organics]

Anyone recommending a starter fertilizer is doing you, the environment, and your new lawn a disservice at this time of year.

Post installation - Sod is watered in and rolled or tampered with a lawn roller
Do not skip this important step - setting the sod creates a bond between the underlying soil and the newly planted block sod - skipping this step can create an environment of lumps or at a worst case - air gaps that prevent the new sod from taking root

Sod professionally delivered and installed
St Augustine -
Palmetto [shade tolerant grass]
